Waterworks I, 2021

7" x 9" x 1 3/4"

acrylic gouache on cotton paper mounted on panel

$500

About the work

This piece is about feminine rage. The lion-like creature is a chimera between western depiction of lions in etchings of composite beasts and the Cantonese lion dance lion costume. Bunnies are considered gender-ambiguous in my symbolic language. As a student in Hong Kong, I had to memorize The Ballad of Mulan, and the last stanza always stayed with me:

β€œThe buck bounds here and there,
Whilst the doe has narrow eyes.

But when the two rabbits run side by side,
How can you tell the female from the male?”

This panel is painted on both sides with the diamond pattern depicted in the second photo. The top and bottom sides are painted in hot pink.

Florescent pigment was used to create this painting, the painting can glow under black light.

Special care instructions:

Acrylic gouache has a very matte finish, to retain this matte finish, make sure to wash your hands of oils before handling the painting or wear gloves for the handling. Dust with a soft brush.
