About the work

I was born in 1993, I don’t have any memory of the July 1st, 1997 Handover of Hong Kong from the British back to the Chinese, but I keep hearing about that day. It was pouring, the mainland Chinese were joyous, the British were somber, and Hongkongers were caught in the middle. Some say it was prophetic. I shouldn’t have feelings about a day I don’t have conscious memory of, but I do. July 1st is also very close to July 4th. I am always conflicted about fireworks and celebration at the beginning of July. On the first, I am supposed to remember the day Hong Kong started to lose its freedom, and on the fourth I am supposed to celebrate American independence.

This panel is painted on both sides with the flourish pattern depicted in the second photo. The top and bottom sides are painted in florescent red.

Florescent pigment was used to create this painting, the painting can glow under black light.

Special care instructions:

Acrylic gouache has a very matte finish, to retain this matte finish, make sure to wash your hands of oils before handling the painting or wear gloves for the handling. Dust with a soft brush.
